After The Fire
The miseducation of…..
A Photo
A memorial
A Muse
The Fire as it’s referred to here, or The Bradford Fire as it’s known in the rest of Yorkshire happened in that final game of the season, a few weeks before I started my own life in this fair city.
I found this memorial in Millennium Square and it got me remembering.
Remembering patients still recovering on the wards when I arrive like a rabbit staring into bright headlights as a newly qualified doctor.
Remembering patients in my old practice who never really recovered from the loss of fathers, brothers, sisters, mothers, grandparents, grandchildren in the 20 odd years I was their attending.
Remembering working at the club on match days for 5 years, the new fire proof stadium and how the mostly unspoken remembrance was heard loitering in stairwells, in the space between exultant cheers of goals and victory. Sometimes the hard old men of the game would let their guard down and tell me their own story of that day, seemingly prompted by nothing (but the remembrance of fire or absence).
A Tune
I’m not sure I can match the photo/muse and tune today.
