Le Pong

When I opened the front door this morning I sensed the distinct odour of rotten eggs. Suspecting a gas leak I checked in the garage but the smell was not coming from the pipes or boiler. I walked around outside and the smell was quite pervasive. Just to be on the safe side we decided to call British Gas. Half an hour later we gave up as the phone had still not been answered. It turned out that the smell came from a gas leak at a chemical plant in France.

If they have to spill something why couldn't it have been a load of Chambertin* - wafted here on a favourable wind.

* Other red wines would also suffice.
