Terracing.....

...agricultural terracing, La Gomera.

For those of you who’ve been following this blog since I started in 2010, this photograph has certain similarity to the photos I took whilst living and working in Nepal.

It is on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands, where terracing the landscape for agriculture is an age old practice, to maximise the resources of the landscape.

Sadly there are other parallels. A dwindling population as the younger generation travels elsewhere to find work; a decline therefore in labour to maintain the agricultural needs of the island, and a reliance on imports for a sizeable proportion of the island’s food....
