Approach to Tipu Sultan's summer Palace, Mysore
Long day today. Up at 4am, and still active at 10pm after a 7 hour train journey, Chennai – Mysuru, and a wheeched around yet more monuments and old buildings.
Actually, today's theme was Tipu Sultan, a local chieftan / ruler who hated the British and who, together with ancestors, offspring and The French, conducted several wars against GB, finally succumbing to Cornwallis.
The interesting building was Tipu Sultans summer palace which was built primarrily of teak, 250 years ago, and is still going strong. It's inner walls are covered in painted depictions of his victories over the English. The illustration of the final losing battle just happens to include a Highland regiment.
We visited the dungeons where the first English protagonist was incarcerated, for 18 years. A Colonel Baillie I recall. The small blocks of stone protrudingfrom the dungeon walls are where the residents arms were secured before the place was flooded from the adjacent river, until the prisoners had to stand on tiptoe to keep their noses above water.
Later, when darkness fell, we were treated to an earbashing of catchy tunes and a slightly feeble / and uncoordinated light / fountain show. Mozzies drove us away to dinner in the posh bit of our hotel. Third and final attempt at finding tender lamb. Think I'll stick to veggie, perhaps.
Relaxed day tomorrow. Just one temple to visit, 30kms away. Watch this space.
