Quail Island
In the middle of Lyttelton Harbour is Quail Island, steeped in history which includes being used as a quarantine station and training ground for huskies and ponies heading to the Antarctic with explorers Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton and Admiral Byrd.
Now the island is a conservation area, aiming to be pest free and encouraging expansion of native forest.
A new 'pou whenua' (land post) has been carved and placed on the summit of the island. At 9 metres, it's a spectacular site from all directions.
