Corner Shop
Today's theme is "Corner".
The corner shop is a great British institution, portrayed in the BBC TV comedy series "Open All Hours". The corner shop is an essential part of many village or small town; it is a small, independent shop selling a range of essentials, from groceries to medicines to stationery and much else. One of its most valuable features is the extended opening hours that these shops usually maintain, They have always been a valuable community facility, offering a friendly, personal service that the big supermarkets are not able to do.
However, it is a wonder that they manage to survive in the presence of the national supermarket chains, especially as many of these now open their shops 24 hours a day.
It is an interesting (and typically British) quirk that many "corner" shops are not actually on a corner - it is just a term used to describe this kind of shop. However, my example here is genuinely on a corner near a residential block of flats.
