Twisted Trunk

Discovered this very unusual knobbly tree trunk in one of the quads in Wolfson College. I had intended to take a blip of a building today but thought this tree was so unusual I could not ignore it! It looked as though something had been climbing round the trunk and it had since died and left behind these strange lumps! Any ideas?
