Ancient artifact
Today is the Feast Day of Saint Chad of Lichfield, our church's Patronal Saint, and the Patronal service was celebrated yesterday.
In the vestibule of the church, this illuminated page and the artifact are displayed in a mounted frame. The page recounts some of the history of this saint.
The fifth paragraph in the scroll reads as follows:
The Saxon cathedral disappeared and the present Lichfield Cathedral, dedicated to St. Chad was built in the thirteenth century. Our piece of stone, sent to us by the Cathedral authorities is from later building work. Dating from about 1350, it is a piece of limestone carved in Perpendicular Gothic and probably formed part of the screen behind the high altar which was removed during eighteenth century renovations.
Interesting.
