Up 'Anley Duck!
I spent much of the day with dad today. We went to the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley to have a look at the PDSA Dickin Medal photography exhibition. The medal was started in 1943 to honour the work of animals in World War II. The medal was awarded 54 times between 1943 and 1949 – to 32 pigeons, 18 dogs, 3 horses, and a ship's cat. It was revived in 2000. Maria Dickin was the founder of the PDSA.
This image, of a statue of Arnold Bennett, was taken outside the museum. The brick building behind was built in 1858 for the Staffordshire Potteries Waterboard Company. I use to visit it each week in the 80s when it was converted into Heath's Wine Bar.
The extra is of the "Steel Man" or Man of Steel, also found outside the museum. It was created to commemorate the struggle of the Shelton Bar Steel Workers to preserve the future of their works for the community.
