Remembering

I have blipped the St Mathews Churchyard before, and indeed, these graves.

St Mathews was the asylum until the end of the last century (and yes, I mean the late 1990s.) if you look closely at the photo, you may notice some gravestones just propped up against a tree. They don’t have names on them, just numbers. When they had enough patients to bury, they were laid to rest in groups, with one stone to mark them.

Much more prominent in this photo are the group of gravestones to the left. They are far more modern, and with clear symbols and inscriptions.

A couple of years ago, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission took over this cemetery as there were just a few war graves here.  They have certainly been more regular in their tidying.

I went to capture my annual view of the wonderful Staffordshire daffodils, but this year, I was rather caught up in the contrasts.

Edit: I looked up the date of closure.  31 March 1995.
