The music of the Gods
The shell of a giant Triton, Charonia tritonis, that I picked up on the Astrolabe reef in Fiji some 50 years ago. The shells are also known as Triton's trumpets because the South Sea islanders use them as a musical instrument. The shells are named after the Greek God Triton, the son of Poseidon, God of the sea. The God Triton is often portrayed blowing a large seashell horn similar to this species.
