This archway is the remains of a chapel dedicated to St Edmund. He landed at Hunstanton in 855 to be crowned king of East Anglia. He led an army against the Viking invaders, was defeated, captured and martyred!!! He became the first patron saint of England. There is a fascinating legend that his head was chopped off and taken to the nearby woods and buried. When his loyal soldiers went to find it, it could not be found. However, they came across a wolf - usually a very fierce animal - and there between his front paws was Edmund's head in perfect condition. The wolf was guarding it and keeping it safe - a lovely little legend!
