World Lymphedema Day
Today, the 6 March, is World Lymphedema Day. Lymphedema is not a rare disease but a massive public health problem. Lymphedema happens when there’s a blockage in your lymphatic system that prevents fluids from draining, which results in swelling. Primary lymphedema occurs by itself, while secondary lymphedema is caused by another medical condition, like cancer treatment. Lymphedema affects an estimated 15% of all cancer survivors and up to 30% of all those treated for breast cancer, including me.
The goal of World Lymphedema Day is to make lymphedema and lymphatic diseases a global priority, to engage governments and researchers around the world to dedicate themselves to finding advanced treatments and cures, and to address the massive psycho-social burden of those whose quality of life has been negatively transformed by this disease.
