We debated just this today as we made our way across Shap Fell. Was it always a wasteland? Did war efforts, industrialisation or farming create the desolate barren land we now see? I suspect once these fells were wooded and covered in flora, millennia ago perhaps this beautiful bird's ancestors looked out at something spectacular, wild and untamed.
