New York Accommodation
Started the day by heading down to First Avenue with First Street, where we stayed on our second visit to New York. It was a Hare Krishna hostel, upstairs from a vegetarian restaurant. I remember when I called them to book, I had to confirm that we wouldn’t eat meat on the premises or drink alcohol. That was fine by us and we didn’t know it was Hare Krishna till we arrived and noticed the chants through the loud speakers and orange cloths draped everywhere! Sadly they don’t offer rooms any more or we’d have been tempted.
The first time we came we stayed in The Chelsea Hotel. I booked that one too, and we had no idea of its fame until we arrived and everyone in the lift sounded like a budding writer or an aspiring actor. Bb and I stood there in our Barbour jackets feeling like country bumpkins!! Our cameras round our necks might have helped us look a bit creative!
We did have a third visit, when we brought Bb’s mum for her 80th birthday.... and there’s a story for another blip!
It was raining today, cloudy and cold and so after wandering around down there, we had lunch in The Dutch, corner of Sullivan Street, near Houston Street. Here’s Bb in the Cafe Havana on Elizabeth Street and Prince Street, where we ate in on previous visits, but was a tad too busy for us today. I did wonder as I looked at the servers how many of them would have been born on our first visit there!
Back to the hotel later afternoon to escape the rain and for a rest. American tv seems so depressing, with all the ads for medicine for a multitude of ailments and health package deals which I’m sure not everyone can afford.
Out now at night for a drink in the 1 Hotel, just behind our own hotel, which great as it is, isn’t anything as interesting as our first two accommodation choices!
