Urban myth?

Some people will tell you that the often quoted line 'Birmingham has more canals than Venice' is an urban myth. Some may even tell you that they know someone, who knows someone, who knows the chap that first generated the line.

Fact or fiction? I don't think that the Venice Tourist Board is that worried by the competition!
