PIED OYSTERCATCHER Haematopus ostralegus
An interesting thing about the South Island pied Oystercatcher (SIPOC)is the beak! They dont use these like a pair of pliers - they open the shells by digging into the shell and prizing outwards ! I think this must require huge strength.
We dont have any oysters in the estuary so they feed mainly on cockles. SICOC'S ? No dont think so .
