Horses, horses.......

.....everywhere! Our hotel in Newmarket is literally a 2 minute walk from the gallops, so this morning we went to see the horses - and they were everywhere! Everywhere you looked, there were horses, I can't imagine just how much money was on the hoof! According to something I read, there are about 5000 horses in Newmarket, 2500 in training and 2500 resident on the stud farms. It was a fabulous sight.
After watching the horses, we set off to Welney WWT centre, between Ely and Wisbech. It's a lovely centre, well worth a visit, but we didn't get as much of a walk as expected due to flooding, welly boots were essential if you wanted a walk. We did see hares, reed bunting, a kestrel, a marsh harrier, an egret, countless Pochard and mallard, and swans. I can now tell the difference between a Mute swan, a Whooper swan and a Bewick swan.
After Welney, we went to Wicken Fen and had a great walk there. We had visited Wicken Fen last May when we were in the area, so it was great to go back again.
It's been a fabulous day!

The extra swans - the one with the orange bill is a Mute swan, the other, with the yellow bill, is a Whooper swan.
