Winter's Flowers

And then, if it's possible, it got even COLDER! So cold that even running water was trying its best to freeze.

The local temperature Wednesday morning hovered around 5 degrees F (-15 C). It would not be an exaggeration to characterize this weather as "bitter cold."

But winter has its beauties. Surely it does. And so, not afraid of the cold, I went in search of them.

I stopped along Spring Creek to photograph the spillway near the bridge.

And discovered the edges of the creek were lined with frost crystals. Intricate patterns, like doilies tatted by the fussiest old aunt you can imagine.

Look closely but don't touch, because they crumble when you touch them!

It seems that the snow queen keeps a garden after all, and these are her flowers.

And how about a song to accompany this cold, white world . . . The Moody Blues, A Winter's Tale.
