Sunshine on a Rainy Day

Today caused some flashbacks to 2001 and the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak. Hubby and I found ourselves at the epicentre and seconded out to provide veterinary services.
It was harrowing.
The uncertainty, the constant updates from the mysterious COBRA "bunker", the breaking of bad news, the sick feeling when a notification came in, the weeping, broken farmers...
The vets, on their knees; the old worthies working from dawn until dark when they should have been enjoying their retirement, the young vets completely thrown in at the deep end and churned out months later with a weary cynicism etched onto their faces.
Today felt like 2001 revisited - talk of contingencies and biosecurity, loss of income, fear, and uncertainty.
One client refused to wash his hands as he was "wearing gloves"!
Had I known about it at the time, he would have been asked to leave. Vets know a lot about biosecurity and epidemiology. I refuse to put my staff at risk.
I can only hope that tomorrow is a better day as the thought of months like this don't bear thinking about.
However, we are an innovative and resilient profession. Time to harness those strengths.
