Maintained a safe social distance

Humans cannot be trusted.

Groups of Pukeko around the lake this evening seemed hyperalert. On a couple of occasions I did see the one or two very small chicks, which must be only a matter of days old. Once there were at least ten adults (perhaps some may have been juveniles) scattered around as a protective force for one very small chick. Which obeyed the alarm calls and despite apparent curiosity did vanish into the undergrowth near the lake edge.
