Duck Grey Teal Anas gracilis

You put your right foot in, you put your right foot out, you put your right foot in and you shake it all about.............................. (hope it's not stuck in your head now)

These little dabbling ducks both have the same colouring, which is very similar to a chestnut teal. They have a distinct call, especially at night. Are often found in groups and are not considered endangered, although they share habitat with bigger, stronger mallards.

They nest on the ground or in rabbit burrows or hollow trees.

They are widespread in NZ, and have been noted here since 1879, and although there was a big influx in the fifties of birds escaping the drought in Australia, they are considered to be a NZ native.
