A place in time

The old apple tree

It was a sad day today.

The old apple tree in the garden had tilted so much over the past couple of years that we felt it had to be taken down.  Our garden is heavy clay soil and it seems that the roots just could not hold the old girl upright any longer.  It seems particularly cruel as the old girl had provided such an abundant crop of apples in 2019.  Mr A did try to lighten the load on the left hand side a couple of years ago (hence the funny shape), but it was obviously not enough to prevent the further lean.

Our house was built in about 1939, and I believe the area used to be an old apple orchard.  Certainly, the road parallel to ours is called Orchard Road, so it's a good guess!  So, this dear old tree was very likely to have been quite an age when the house was built, judging by the girth of the main trunk, and she survived the nearby bombing during WW2.

Extra shows the aftermath.

And yes, we do plan to source and plant a new apple tree...

Thought for the day:

"A man doesn't plant a tree for himself.  He plants it for posterity."  (Alexander Smith)
