Green Smoothies - Day 1
As some of you know, I feed my dogs a raw diet. After much research and internal debate, I started Loki on a half raw diet a couple of years ago. Corra's breeder is really pro-raw and Corra was raised on a raw diet. So once Corra came home, I stuck with a full raw diet for her, and within 5 months or so of her coming home, Loki was also full raw. I bought a chest freezer and I make bulk orders of every kind of meat and organ I can get my hands on, without totally breaking the bank (they still haven't had much lamb, no goat, pheasant, venison, or buffalo yet!). They both have absolutely gorgeous coats, they have almost no smell (I say almost because Loki smells a little like clean water and Corra smells like, I dunno, hay?) and they have sleek, muscular bodies. Why am I telling you all this? Because I recently realized that I care very much about what I put into my dogs. And I have seen what an ideal diet does for them. I was wondering why I don't put the same care into what Mr. Badger and I eat? I buy organic occassionally and I buy locally, pastured chicken - but let's face it, we eat terribly! Both of us have diabetes in our families and heart attacks and cancer. So I have been looking into how to better our diets.
Of course, the dogs being on raw lead me down a similar path for us. (Ick, not meat though!!) I eventually found Victoria Boutenko and her discovery of Green Smoothies. The power of raw plants blended into a smoothie that could be taken daily. So, I ordered a fancy, schmancy Vita mix blender (which arrived yesterday), I went to the grocery store and filled a cart (literally!) with every green and fruit that I could, and this morning I made our first green smoothie - strawberry, apple, and romaine lettuce. Yea, so green + red = brown, it doesn't look all of that appetizing does it ;) I can't say it is a taste sensation, but it is tolerable. Supposedly over time, your body adjusts to the lack of sweetness. I hope so! After about 20 minutes, I still haven't finished even one of these glasses (I am supposed to drink 2!) - but I feel so full already, it is amazing! I am going to write a little blurb on here daily to track my progress. Wish me luck, this is going to be interesting!!
