Turtles All The Way Down

Guilty Feminist

And with that, I've finished Book 7 of my Bookworm Challenge; the Guilty Feminist by Deborah Frances-White. In retrospect, I wasn't really in the right headspace for this. I was already going through some anxiety stuff before all the coronavirus stuff kicked off, but I'm struggling a bit more now. On top of all the sensible anxieties about a global pandemic (people are dying, what if I get it, what if I carry it to someone vulnerable etc.), there's also a few more personal anxieties (does my heart condition make me more at risk, how will the charity I work for recoup the money lost by all the cancelled events, how will I cope with social distancing/isolation etc.) All this on top of my usual worries, which are a combo of rational and irrational thoughts, and you have a Stace that's not going to be greatly receptive to essays and interviews about how women are oppressed, levels of privilege and not-very-subtle hints that if you're not actively resisting the patriarchy then you're complicit in its awfulness. At any other time I might've seen this book as a rousing call to action but at the moment it just made me feel bad. Need to pick a less serious book for my next one... The Challenge finishes soon, and so I'm aiming to hit 10 books by then. If you can give anything, I'd be super grateful; as I was saying, our charity will be missing out on a lot of events income over the next few months, and so every little bit will help us make a difference for our patients during this difficult and frankly quite scary time.
