A Point Of View
‘I looked upon the street to see a gaggle of striplings making fair merry, and no doubt spreading the plague well about. Not a care had these rogues for the health of their elders.’
- Samuel Pepys Diaries-London 1664
Sitting here you’d never guess
that behind those buildings,
on the much larger beach,
crowds are gathered.
Loads of people living elsewhere
all had the same brilliant idea:
‘While all the rest
of the conformists are self-isolating
it’ll be fine for us to get some sea air.’
So they got in their cars
and travelled here
thinking:
‘It’s a backward, quiet little place,
where the usual rules won’t apply.
The pubs will probably be open
and we can give their businesses a boost.’
But:
‘What’s that?
Everything is closed
and you don’t want visitors!
Why all the fuss?
How can you be so unreasonable?
We thought you’d be pleased to see us.
We’re fairly sure we don’t have Coronavirus.’
