What's the opposite of "smiley"?

What looks like an artefact in a marble is actually a piece of jewellery underneath a glass ball. I guess the jewel maker never saw this in his piece of art.

But why is the "miserable" looking so distressed? It is the fact that this piece of jewellery is not in use anymore, as the ring it was attached to got lost?

Or is it just a man-made impression of a man-made view through a glas ball on a piece of jewellery? Perhaps. If so, I seem to have met the theme of today :)
