Cold
By 'eck, it was bitter today, wasn't it? When I ventured out at lunchtime, even a firmly-clamped black pea coat, woollen scarf and leather gloves could not ward off the chill. It was like being arm- wrestled by an ice giant. And when I left the office to head home the thickening drifts literally crunched beneath my soles: like the noise of someone biting into an apple.
In a slow moment this afternoon I looked up the Wikipedia entry for 'cold'. Yes, cold has its own entry. Apparently feeling cold is all to do with there being a discrepancy between the heat made by our bodies and our surroundings. When our bodily heat can dissipate into the environment around us we feel comfortable. But when our bodily heat is out of sync with the surroundings, we feel cold. Or something! I'm not entirely sure I've got that right. But anyway it's a universal experience of mammals. We're all warm-blooded, you see. Well, sometimes we are!
Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yes... check out these unsuspecting shoppers! Little did they know when they stepped onto that escalator that I was waiting at the top. Ha ha hah!!
