Looking at the sidewalk again
These sewer-outlet covers seem to be the oldest ones in the city — they are smaller than the others and have an old-fashioned design. I think my neighborhood must once have been filled with Scots: my house (built in the late 1880s) was originally inhabited by a man named Andrew Weir, and the Berkeley foundry that manufactured these sewer covers bears the name H. C. Macaulay.
