Nearly a metre high already, as the flower unfurls

This amaryllis seems to have survived the last year in good shape. It stayed out in the cabin and was largely neglected which they seem to be happy with. Little water, and low level heat to keep the frost away through winter.

I started watering again bout two months ago and then brought the bulb into the house when the flower shoot started to appear. The warmer temperature has allowed it to grow rapidly and yesterday it showed the first signs of the flower unfurling. Today the outer protective leaves split and the four flower buds began to force their way out in to the air.

The stem is now nearly a metre long above the soil in its the pot. Where all the material for the cells to grow come from I have no idea. It is rather amazing. I won't say magical. By this evening the buds have opened even more and I think the first flower will unfurl with a day.
