Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital

This rather unusual part of our medical history isn't, perhaps, as well known as it should be. It dates from the time when cold sea water and bracing winds were felt to be health-giving (plenty of both in Seaford). When you see how close to the beach it is, you can appreciate how uncomfortable the regime was. Children with polio were looked after here, and a daily dip was prescribed. If they couldn't walk they were dunked in the sea in nets.
