Essential Service
I listened to an interview with a truck driver this morning. He said that his job is really difficult these days because there are no places open that have toilet facilities or food services on the highways. He lives in Canada but drives into the US as well, and is on the road for days. A bucket (or a pee pot, as he called it) is what he uses as a toilet and he tries to keep clean by using baby wipes. He misses his family and is always glad to get home to see them - and to have a shower. The interviewer said that hopefully truck drivers will get more respect and recognition for how essential they are to keep supplies moving. This truck was parked at the ferry terminal, waiting to go back to Vancouver Island. We'd be up the creek without a paddle if the trucks weren't able to deliver food and all other kinds of goods to this and other Gulf Islands. I waved at the driver and gave him a thumbs up and got a wonderful smile and a wave back. Definitely among the heroes who are working so hard to keep things going. I like the heart of hands holding strawberries and the motto of the company, "At the heart of food and service." Not the best photo, but it did fit with the interview I heard
I've never understood why some jobs are supposedly more prestigious than others. Don't we all contribute to society in whatever ways we can?
