Calton Hill #2: Observatory House

Continuing my occasional series of photos on Edinburgh's Calton Hill, today's post shows 'Observatory House'. It's slightly to the west of the Old City Observatory shown in part one of my series. Originally a rubble tower and enlarged in the 19th century, the house was designed by architect James Craig (1744-1795), who was a key planner of Edinburgh's New Town, in the 18th century. Built as a family home, it was used briefly as an observatory until the construction of the dedicated building next door. After the occupants moved out in the 1980s the building fell into dereliction and was placed on Historic Scotland's 'Buildings at Risk Register' in 2002. Fortunately it was purchased by the Vivat Trust who spent a fortune restoring the place. Now they rent it out as holiday accommodation for up to eight people at the cost of 1K a week!
Thanks to everyone for making Mrs. Legodude welcome on blip, she appreciates it. Although she won't post every day, her journal will be well worth following (husband points earned lol).
Two noteworthy blip anniversaries today. Jimbofin posted his 365th and All these things posted his 1500th! Check them out for some great pics.
