Blossoms
Today is two weeks since we went into lockdown. This week we have been warned the deaths will escalate and I dread hearing the figures at the daily Coronovirus update briefing on BBC. We all know that the lockdown will most likely be extended and will not just be for 3 weeks as initially thought. Journalists are starting to put pressure on the government to explain what our exit strategy is, how can anyone be expected to know that now?
A few weeks ago we had food shortages due to undue pressure put on the supply chain as a result of panic buying. There wasn't actually a shortage of food. However, things could be different this summer. With fields in Kent being left to rot as a result of the lockdown and no pickers able to harvest the crops, there are currently millions of spears of asparagus rotting away. About 90% of pickers come from eastern Europe and now they cannot come to the UK. This will be followed by strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, which all need harvesting from May. Our seasonal fruit will therefore be very limited this summer, and this could extend to other products too.
Another walk to the woods with Xena this morning, she is still very nervous when large trucks or fast cars come past when we walk on the pavement to the woods. When we got home again I took some photos of these blossoms in our garden - they don't last very long but look so pretty while they are in flower.
I was not surprised to hear that Boris was taken to hospital last night, when he failed to reappear on TV after his 7 days of isolation I did think something was not right - I do hope he is recovering well. It must also be such a worry that his pregnant fiance is showing symptoms of Covid-19.
