Ewell Court House

In the late seventeenth century, the fame of Epsom Spa brought many London merchants to this part of Surrey, and gentlemen's residences were constructed for them. One of these was near the old  farm of Ewell Court and was called Avenue House. By the eighteenth century the house had come to the Bridges family, who made their money from the gunpowder mills on the river Hogsmill. (see earlier blip). The house was later transformed and became Ewell Court. The subsequent owners sold it to the council on 1935. During WWII the house was the centre of Civil Defence for West Ewell.
Following an extensive refurbishment programme, the House and garden is now a thriving centre used for, amongst other things, adult education, weddings, children's nursery, garden centre, library and cafe. 
I can recommend the cafe - although closed today, of course!
