#4 'A history of Chailey in 50 images'
The fourth image in the series and another that's from outside the parish. We move forward a few years to 1081 and the founding of the Priory of St Pancras in Lewes by monks from Cluny. At its peak the Priory held over 20,000 acres of land including much of Chailey, as recorded in the charter of 1095. The manor of Balneath formed a major part of the estate and was granted to Thomas Cromwell at the Dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. It then passed to Anne of Cleves and subsequently to Sir William Goring, remaining in the Goring family until the 20th century.
