Nest progress
The bushtit nest is almost finished, and they are spending more time inside the nest. This is the female squeezing through the “door” - she is fat with eggs and having a hard time fitting through the exit.
I spent a good part of the morning watching the three crows eyeballing the nest. This is the corvid family that I fed and nurtured last spring and summer, and now it looks as though they’re back to betray me! If they destroy the nest, I would be devastated — such a big word, but I’ve invested so much hope into this little project, and the tiny birds have put so much work into it. Yes, I know, that’s Nature, but it feels like a cruel twist. I paced back and forth this morning (pacing in a wheelchair, mind you) and finally decided I needed to let go and let Nature.... The nest was still intact this evening.
Extra photos are the would-be marauders.
