Black Saturday

Today’s walk was round Inveresk and home via. the  neighbouring town of Wallyford. On the way back went past the Memorial stone to the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, which took place on a ‘Black Saturday’ in 1547.

In an effort to unite the Kingdoms with a marriage between Prince Edward of England and Princess Mary of Scotland, the Battle of Pinkie (1547) saw a resumption of the Rough Wooing. The invading English were attacked by a larger Scottish force but destroyed it through formidable fire-power.  Nearby Fa’side Castle was burnt as the English withdrew.

Back home now, chilling in the garden.

I hope you are having a good Easter, despite the circumstances. Stay safe.
