Day 28 - Ernst Chain
Ernst was a German born chemist 1906-1979 . His family was Jewish and he was born in Berlin. When the Nazis came to power he left Germany in 1933. He did a PhD at Cambridge and lectured at Oxford University. In 1939 he joined Florey and they revisited the work of Alexander Fleming , they discovered how to isolate and concentrate the germ killing agent in penicillin. For this research Chain, Florey and Fleming received the Nobel prize in 1945. The blue plaque is on the house where he lived overlooking Wimbledon Common.
