Life in the time of Covid 19
On leaving one place and arriving in another.
Do you know l am a seasoned traveller, l first flew when l was 5 years old, quite a big deal then and l have been back and forth between New Zealand and various countries l have called home over the decades. BUT, the trip from Auckland to Doha was the worse trip l have ever had. 18 hours of being squeezed into seats that were so small and close together that my knees were right up against the seat in front, if l needed to get out l had to climb over the seats. I think that Qatar airlines must have put in a couple of extra rows.
After an interminable time we arrived at Doha and even though we had been through security in Auckland we had to again eventually being put on to another plane for the final 7 hour leg to London. Well what difference, we had a brand new plane with mini armchairs, almost, topped up by the fact that plane was only half full and so we could spread out. It was a really enjoyable final leg.
Back at Heathrow airport we were met by a taxi driver who whisked us home and 30 hours after leaving Waihi beach, New Zealand, we are back in our flat in London with sun streaming in the windows. My sons had done shopping for us so we wont starve and my friend downstairs has made us a beautiful curry for supper tonight so l don't have to cook.
I was struck by the different way my two countries are approaching lockdown, there were plenty of private cars out this morning in London and all sorts of shops were open. This is in remarked contrast to New Zealand where very few cars are to be seen and all the shops are shut.
I look forward to my own bed tonight.
