In The Navy

Up in the loft today and rediscovered this 21x17 photograph of my wife's grandfather who hailed from the Isle of Lewis. Meant to have it framed sometime ago, so a trip to the framers when we are allowed back on the island and this pandemic is over. Eventually it will hang in our croft in Port of Ness, Isle of Lewis.

He survived the First World War and fortunate for him he was not on the Iolaire, which was carrying sailors returning home from war back to the island. At 2.30am on the 1st January 1919 she hit rocks one mile away from Stornoway Harbour, 201 men out of 283 people on board perished, one of the worst maritime disasters in the UK.

"Life is much too short and precious
To spend fighting wars each day
 War can't give life
It can only take it away".
