Jack-by-the-Hedge

Alliaria petiolata. Also known as Garlic Mustard
A biennial which is just coming into flower. It is one of the food plants of the Orange tip butterfly.

This is an extremely common wild flower. It gets is name from its preference for always growing alongside hedges and walls. I don’t think I have ever seen it in the middle of an open field.
Its leaves have long been used as a flavouring in sauces for fish and lamb. One of my books records that in 1993 it was on sale for £1 per bunch at a smart Italian delicatessen in Covent Garden.

The extra is a garden shrub which caught my eye on the way home. Probably a Berberis I should think.
