Welsh Slate

I love the way the light picks up a myriad of colours in this slate wall. From grey to blue to the pale yellow of the lichen growing there.

Each of these slates had to be cut and split by hand using a wooden hammer and chisel. There looks to be very little mortar between the slates. So little that plants are able to lodge in between the rows and grow there quite happily.

When I think of slate, I think of old fashioned slate boards that were used in school classrooms to be written on with white chalk.
