petrol pump
I was alerted to some interesting urban archaeology along Salamander Street in Leith. Max and I hopped on the bikes and travelled North for our daily exercise. Land is prepared for a new housing development on the site of the Edinburgh and Leith Glass Works. The circular foundation of one of the huge furnaces can be clearly seen (see extra). I liked the old petrol pump. The Edinburgh News has an article with some old photos of the Glass Works. Quite cool some old stuff is still lying around. The name Salamander Street comes from the furnaces. Salamanders were believe to be fire-proof. The bike ride down Leith Street and Leith Walk was pleasant, not many cars around. After our sight-seeing we went home via Portobello. It was good to be out on the bikes.
