Lingfield Road - No 2 of an Occasional Series
Compared to the 1870 map Lingfield Road, after 30 years is, with the coming of the Railway, becoming much more urban.
On the southern side is now a host of what would have been described as "Artesian" housing; pairs of semi-detached terraced style housing. Each house has a number and as we'll see, some have names.
On the Northern side a posh new house "Southwick House" built especially for local landowner and farmer Henry Heasman has been erected in the corner plot (some time before 1891). He is still shown as living there in the 1911 Census. For a while, the House was the local public library. The land (including a large stable block) was sold for housing after WW2 and is now the site of Southwick Close. Flats now occupy the site of the former house.
Next, on the northern side are 3 large villas. Rehoboth Villa, Beaumont and Homelea. I'll write a bit more about them in a future post.
