For Frances
Martin’s Aunt Frances died this afternoon.
She was 100 years old and had lived an extraordinary life. Daughter of a miner, her father died when she was in her teens. Despite this, she and two of her brothers graduated from Glasgow University, something almost unheard of for working class families at that time.
She emigrated to America and founded a Montessori school which she owned and ran until she was 92 years old.
She then returned to Scotland where she lived the last years of her life.
She died peacefully, her prayer book in her hands.
