In The Occupied Territory

Right said Fred

Today was a very sad day for me, others too, but this blip is for me.
This is Fred. he is one of the co-owners of OneUp records in Belmont Street, Aberdeen.
After over 34 years selling music, t-shirts etc, this independent music store is closing it's doors for the very last time on Thursday and everything has to be emptied by 6th of next month.
It is a sad sign of the times that Internet music in all of its forms are the norm nowadays and they have been losing money hand over fist for months now.
The main owner, Raymond, started off selling second hand albums from a stall in a clothes shop, long time defunct, called Happy Trails, named after a Pure Prairie League album. A band that Raymond hated.
His first proper shop was opened in 1979, situated just up the road from the clothes shop.
He opened a second one on George St; and this is when Fred joined. After amalgamating the two shops into one in Diamond St. where it got so busy that they had to have doormen. Eventually they moved to where they are now.
I have know Fred since the early seventies and Raymond since the late seventies. I occasionally helped out in his first shop on Saturdays. Hence the extra sadness.
They used to have live music and DJ sets in the store occasionally. Amongst the artists that have played there was Biffy Clyro and Paulo Nutini, as well as local bands and singers.
Today I bought two cd's, Jimi Hendrix...Are you experienced, and Janis Joplin's Greatest hits. June purchased a Stephen Still Triple album set.
One Up. Gone but not forgotten.
