a lifetime burning

A love story

Sometime before World War I, Fred (pictured above), worked for Waring and Gillow a luxury furniture and furnishings firm in London.  Opportunities for advancement being limited, when a vacancy came up in the company's Buenos Aires business he applied for and was given the job as (I believe) a commercial purchasing manager.  In Buenos Aries, still in his early twenties he was to meet a young French lady called Marie who was teaching French.  The assumption is that Fred may have signed up to lessons and gone on to court his teacher.  Unfortunately we will never know now, as the memories of the generation that might be able to tell us are patchy to say the least.

Unfortunately for them, in 1914 the World War intervened.  Both of them went back to their own countries, probably not realising how long the war was going to last.  Fred joined the London Scottish and spent his war fighting for his king and country.  But he sent this photo of himself in uniform to his Marie, and when the was was finally over they were able to get back together, marry and settle down.

Fred and Marie were my Grandad and Grandma.

As you can see, Fred has wonderfully unblemished skin, at this point he must be in his mid-twenties, so I'm guessing that the professional photographer did a degree of photo-editing :-)
