Unusual woodpecker plumage
Well, as promised here is a photo of the other female - it always has very ruffled feather, two distinct 'ear' tufts, with a touch of red in them, and an usually mottled and dark breast (not fully shown in this photo). It's too early for it to be a juvenile, and anyway the juveniles have very distinctive marking (red at the top of the head, not the back of the neck), and it comes on its own.
