Day 44 - Sister Nivedita
Day 44 - to Wimbledon for blue plaque for someone new to me ...Sister Nivedita(born Margaret Noble) 1867-1911. She was an Irish teacher, author and social activist. In 1891 she lived in Wimbledon and helped start a school for young children having been influenced by Froebel. She met Swami Vivekananda ( who was troubled by the misery of the people in India under British Rule) in 1895 and travelled to Calcutta, India in 1898. He gave her the name Vivedita( meaning Dedicated to God) .
She opened a girls school in Calcutta and she became immersed in Indian culture and wanted to spread education to the women of the country. She was a prolific writer and travelled extensively in India giving lectures. In 1905 the British Government initiated the partition of Bengal which was a major turning point in the Indian Independence movement for which Nivedita provided much support. She was a very influential female in India, many schools and colleges have been named after her and in 1968 a stamp was issued in her memory. It seems she is more well known in India than the UK.
